Moving in Oakland

Flat blocks and hillside streets ask different things of the crew.

Downtown, Uptown and denser neighborhoods can add elevators, garage clearance, loading entrances and constrained curb space. In the hills, grade, driveway geometry and stairs can become the bigger part of the move.

Oakland has a specific Obstruction Permit process for moving vans when public street parking, curb, sidewalk or a traffic lane needs to be blocked or reserved.

01

Apartments & buildings

Share elevator windows, garage height, loading entrances and COI requirements when our office follows up.

02

Hills & driveways

Steeper streets, narrow driveways and stairs can change truck placement and the safest carry path.

03

Curb reservations

If the move needs public curb space kept clear, OakDOT's Obstruction Permit and sign-posting rules should be handled in advance.

Oakland moving-van curb space

Blocking the curb requires an Oakland permit.

Oakland says an Obstruction Permit is required before blocking or obstructing street parking, curb or gutter, sidewalk, or a traffic lane. The City's permit help page specifically identifies moving vans and storage pods as uses of this permit.

Oakland also states that No Parking signs issued with an Obstruction Permit must be posted 72 hours ahead of the obstruction. If your move relies on reserved public curb space, handle that timing before the crew is scheduled to arrive.

Local planning

Oakland access can change quickly with elevation and density.

A garage apartment near downtown and a house in the hills can be close on a map while requiring completely different truck placement, equipment and carry planning.

We begin with the basic quote request, then confirm the property and building details that affect staging so the crew arrives with a realistic plan.

For hourly-rated moves, our standard rates & policies still apply. The useful part is making the estimate reflect the real access and scope before moving day.
